Sh. Funadhoo Eid Cup 1442 is a futsal tournament organized by the council of Sh. Funadhoo. The purpose of this tournament, as expressed by the council, is to create and give opportunities to the youth of the island. This is also, to celebrate the Fitr Eid. The council, further said that the tournament is generally held in Ramazan but due to Covid-19 lockdowns, consequently, tournament was postponed and scheduled to be held in time for Eid.
During our interview, the council members mentioned that the tournament has already started on the 15th of June, and the final matches are to be held on 26th of June.
The tournament consists of two categories for women and men. There are 10 teams playing in the male category and 4 teams under the female category. On the 27th of June, after the final match is over, the council has also finalized to conduct a volleyball tournament for both the categories: 5 teams are participating under men, and 3 teams under women.
The futsal tournament was 11 days long and the volleyball tournament is to be conducted within a week.
As for the futsal tournament, the champion team will be receiving medals and a money-prize. Additionally, the best five players in both categories will be selected and awarded.
“The main target of this tournament is giving more opportunities to the youth and prepare for the Tekkers Maldives Cup in Sh. Funadhoo,” said Council President, Ahmed Ibrahim.
In the midst of organizing this tournament, the biggest difficulty as mentioned by the council was Covid-19. However, due to the immense support from the sponsors, the council members were pleased to explain that they didn’t face any other difficulties.
