The national football team of the Maldives is participating in an international tournament in Sri Lanka at the end of this year. There are four teams in this tournament, although only the Maldives and Sri Lanka have confirmed their participation. The competition will begin in November of 2021.
The President of the Football Association of the Maldives (FAM), Bassam Adeel Jaleel, hopes that the Maldives National Football Team would benefit from this international tournament and will take advantage of all opportunities to develop Maldivian football.
If the Maldives National Team is participating in this tournament before the Asian Cup Qualifying group stage matches, which will be held in February 2022, it will be a huge advantage.
In the past, Maldives did compete in an invitational tournament in Sri Lanka. The Maldives Under 23 National Team won the Mahinda Rajapaksa Invitational tournament in 2012. The Maldives Under 23 national team has crowned the winner after defeating Pakistan in the final by a score of 2 – 1. In addition, the first SAFF Championship trophy for the Maldives was won in Sri Lanka in 2008.
