The Maldives national football team has started training for the upcoming SAFF Championship, which begins on October 1st in Male'. The SAFF Champion is the biggest competition in South Asia.
The Maldives National Football team began practicing on Thursday night and will compete in the SAFF Championship with a staff of Maldives coaches. FAM has terminated the contract of the previous coach, Martin Koopman of the Netherlands, and has appointed Ali Suzain as Head Coach of the Maldives National Football Team, Ismail Mahfooz has been named Assistant Coach, and Imran Mohamed, a former goalkeeper for the Maldives national team, has been appointed Assistant Coach and Goalkeeper Coach.
The Maldives National Football Team will hold a training camp in Qatar from September 10th to September 28th. FAM has announced that the Maldives national team will play four friendly matches in Qatar while they perform their training program. After practicing in Qatar, the Maldives National Football Team won the last SAFF Championship in 2018.
Although the SAFF Championship will be held in Male, Maldives from October 1st to 16th, only 5 countries have participated, and the tournament will be held in a league format, with the best two teams qualifying for the final.
On the 1st of October 2021, Maldives will face Nepal in the first match of the SAFF Championship. The Maldives will face Bangladesh in the second match on October 7, 2021, and Sri Lanka in the third match on October 10, 2021. The Maldives will play against India in the last match on October 13, 2021. On the 16th of October 2021, the final match will be played.
