Former Italy and Inter Milan’s midfielder, Francesco Moriero agrees to coach the Maldives national football team. The 52-year-old has agreed to sign a one-year contract with Football Association of Maldives (FAM) and will join the team soon.
He spent his last coaching days in Albania’s Dinamo Tirana, in addition to coaching Ivory Coast’s Club Africa Sports. He has also coached clubs in Italy's second and third divisions. He has played for Leche, Cagliary, Roma, Inter Milan, and Napoli during his football career. He also represented Italy at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where he was coached by Cesare Maldini.
Maldives will be Moriero’s first national team that he coaches, and this will be his first time working in Asia. He will be Maldives third coach this year. Martin Koopman of the Netherlands was fired as a coach after Maldives' poor performance in the joint qualification for the FIFA World Cup and the AFC Asian Cup. Following this, at the recent SAFF Championship, the national squad was briefly coached by assistant coach Ali Suzayn.
At the earliest, Moriero will be seen guiding the team at the Mahindha Rajapaksa International tournament next month.
