Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has decided to begin Maldives’ football season with the Presidents Cup. The tournament was last held in the year 2017. The event has been idle ever since and this is the first time it will be hosted after that.
The tournament's opening match will take place on December 15th and will be played in a league system with only one round. As a result, we'll see the eight teams who competed in the Dhivehi Premier League in the previous season. The team with highest score at the end of the league will be crowned champions. The final matches will be played on January 19th. The last team to lift the Presidents Cup trophy was New Radiant in 2017 after beating TC Sports Club with 3 goals to nil.
According to the season calendar, next seasons Charity Shield match will be held on February 7th. The match will be played between the last league champions, Maaziya and the runner up club, Valencia. The new season for the Dhivehi Premier League will begin on February 12th. The league will consist of the same 8 teams from the last league and will have 3 rounds. However, the last league was cut short after the 2nd round due to rising cases of covid-19 in Male’ and the decision was made to not hold the presidents cup and FA cup. The FA cup was cancelled after the teams were selected for the semifinal as well.
Apart from the beforementioned tournaments, next season’s tournaments include the 2nd Division Football Tournament which will be held from 27th to 28th July. Furthermore, the qualification matches for the Dhivehi Premier League will be held on the 5th, 10th, and 14th of August. Minivan Championship, the atoll-specific tournament, will also commence next season. Also in June, the centralized Asian Cup qualification matches will take place. The AFC qualification cup centralized matches will take place from May 17 to 24.
