Maldives’ fastest runner Hassan Saaid and young star Aishath Himna Hassan has been selected as the best players of the 30th National Athletics competition hosted by the Athletics Association of Maldives. This competition went on from last Thursday up to Saturday. They were also the best players in the last National Athletics Championship held in 2019.
This year, Hassan Saaid who participated as a member of DSC (Dhivehi Sifainge Club) has won 4 gold medals and 1 bronze medal. He won gold in men’s 100m, 200m, 400m, and 4x400 running team event. He got his only bronze medal in 4x100 running team event.
Himna, who also got the best player award along with Saaid has won 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal in this year’s competition. She won gold in women’s 100m, 200m, 400m. She also won a gold medal with her club ‘Raaveriyaa’ in the 4x100 running team event.
If we look at this year’s long-distance runs, Mohamed Rasheed (Mode) won gold medals in men’s 5000m and 10,000m running. Both the 800m and 1500m runs were won by Hussain Riza (Kuda Riza). When it comes to women’s long-distance running events, 800m, 1500m, and 5000m runs were won by Aminath Jaisha Juneez.
To no one’s surprise, DSC has won the best men’s club award this year as well. They first won this award in this competition in 2005, and they have won the award ever since. The best women’s club award was won by Track and Field Association.
Even though the National Athletics Championship was held this year, it was canceled last year due to Covid 19. This was also the first tournament that was held in Ekuveni Stadium ever since it has been changed to a synthetic track.
