The upcoming Women’s Football Season is open for the whole of Maldives to participate. This season's first stage has been decided to be held at Lh.Naifaru according to FAM.
FAM had held the Invitation Cup's lucky draw yesterday at Galolhu Stadium. This tournament will be held in Naifaru. 6 teams will participate in the tournament. These teams are Hinnvaru FC, Kurendhoo FC, Apex Sports Club, Dotcom Sports Club, Ideal Movement, and Bazooka Sports Club.
This tournament is set to be held from December 25 to January 15. The matches will be played at Naifaru Turf Ground.
FAM has also decided to hold invitational tournaments in L Atoll, Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi, and Fuvahmulah. Along with this, there will be a tournament played in Male’ between 8 teams in the First Division. These 5 groups’ champions will play a final stage in Male’, and the winner will be crowned as Maldives’ Woman’s Champions.
FAM had tried to hold a women’s football tournament in 2019 as well. But they were not able to go through with the plan due to the few numbers of teams and due to the difficulties in recruiting players for the teams. In 2017, FAM had tried to hold a woman’s league, but at that time also they were unable to get much support and could not hold it.
The last women’s football league was played in 2014. This was between the First Division teams.
The biggest disadvantage for Maldives National Women's Football Team is that they don’t have experience in local tournaments. They mostly get the chance to play only futsal tournaments.
Women's National Team had recently played qualifying at Asia Championship. In order to prepare for that tournament, they had played a friendly at B.Eydhafushi against their team.
Holding a women’s football championship for the whole country is a huge step forward in developing women’s football in the Maldives.
