Club Maldives Cup: FSM into the quarters after defeating WAMCO

In Club Maldives Cup 2021's round-of-16, tournament favorites Club WAMCO lost against FSM 1-3 and has been knocked out of the tournament.

 

FSM will play in the quarterfinal on Saturday night against Club HDC who won 6-1 against Dhivehi Sifainge Club (DSC) last night.

 

In last night’s match, WAMCO was winning by a 1 goal difference at halftime. The match’s scoring was opened at the 8th minute of the match by Ali Haafiz (Haappe).

 

FSM went into the second half well prepared. They won the match by scoring 3 goals in the second half. All 3 of their goals were scored around the last 7 minutes. On the 34th minute of the match, FSM’s experienced player Mohamed Ziyaadh had equalized for FSM. In the next minute, Mohamed Thohir had taken the lead for FSM. After this WAMCO had pressed forward a lot to score a goal back.

 

WAMCO’s Haappe, captain Abdullah Shaffan (Shaaka), and Mohamed Imraan (Immi)’s efforts were saved by FSM’s goalkeeper Abdullah Fayaaz (Faya). During this time, WAMCO had shown disagreement with some of the referee’s decisions.

 

FSM scored their third goal in a counterattack while WAMCO’s players were on the other half. This goal was scored by Ahmed Wijdhaan (Viju).

 

With WAMCO’s defeat, both the teams that played in the latest Club Maldives final have been kicked out of the tournament before the quarterfinals. Former champions BML were kicked out of the group stages.

 

HDC who has not lost a single match in this tournament had beaten DSC with ease last night and traveled to the quarterfinals. HDC’s Ibrahim Rimah (Rimey) had scored a hattrick in this match. The other 3 goals were scored by the team’s captain Mohamed Yaameen (Yaante), Ahmed Sizaan, and Abdullah Shafiu (Shaappe). DSC’s only goal was scored by Ibrahim Farish Ahmed.

 

 

In the first match of the round-of-16, Prison Club had defeated Police Club 3-2 after a very competitive match. Prison Club started the match very strong. There scored their 3 goals in the first 12 minutes of the match. Saajidh Rasheed scored 2 goals and the other goal was scored by Muruthaja Mohamed.

 

Before the end of the first half, Police Club’s Mohamed Ali (Mode) had scored a goal and brought them hope. However, Police were able to score a goal in the second half only near the end of the match. This goal was scored by Zaaidh Ismail Musthafa. After this, Police were unable to get much time to score another goal. Prison Club had gotten quite a few opportunities to score in the second half, but they were unable to make use of their chances.

 

MACL traveled to the quarters last night after defeating MTCC on penalties. They won on penalties by 4-3.

 

MACL’s Sayyah Abbas had scored the first penalty of the match. MTCC Ali Nafiu (Kalhey)’s penalty had hit the post. After this, the 3 penalties by both MACL and MTCC had gone in. MACL’s penalties were scored by Ali Shafiu, Abdullah Suzeyr, and Azyaan Ibrahim. MTCC’s penalties were scored by Hassan Mifraah, Abdullah Muaaz (Auto), and Mohamed Shahuzaan. The next penalty hit by MACL’s Ahmed Sinaah was saved by MTCC’s keeper Ismail Ibrahim. However, after this, MTCC’s Ali Abdullah’s penalty went wide knocking them out of the tournament.

 

The quarterfinal match between Prison Club and MACL will also be played on Saturday night.

 

This tournament’s remaining round-of-16 matches will be played today. MPL will play against Ooredoo. Road Recreation Club (RRC) will meet against Dhiraagu. STO will play against Trade Club while FENAKA will meet STELCO.
