Maira: A Maldivian Basketball Star Rising in Australia

11 December 2021

We rarely see Maldivian young individuals who make a name for themselves in a sport internationally. Even Maldivians who live abroad usually do not partake in such activities. Even though we say this, there are certain individuals who have made a name for themselves in sports such as table tennis and badminton in neighboring countries. There has been no Maldivian who had their voices heard in big sports countries such as America or China, but this might be about to change in the coming years.

The one we are going to be talking about today is 12-year-olf Maira Mehwish Moosa. Maira is living in Australia, Perth. She is currently studying at Willeton Senior Highschool. Her mom Aniyath Ali who comes from Addu Feydhoo is studying for a Ph.D. in Education at one of the universities in Perth. And her dad from Addu Meedhoo is working in Perth. Maira and her family moved to Australia in 2019. Even though Maira is a Maldivian, she was born in Malaysia's Kuala Lampur, and she spent the early parts of her childhood there.

Maira is a brilliant student, and she excels in sports as well. Even now also, she is a star in Willeton Senior Highschool’s Basketball team. She has made a name for herself in her age category within the city and state. She has caught the eyes of multiple coaches. Between 2020 and 2021, Maira had won a bunch of awards in Basketball. She has a very bright future in the eyes of multiple people who have seen her play.

Mara had represented Willeton Senior Highschool in this year’s basketball carnival between the Western Australian Schools. She was included in the top 5 players of the carnival. Junior basketball players get opportunities from different Australian Academies. Maira had played for Sparks Club before. She is currently playing for Club Roadies.

Maira has been given the opportunity to train as a Western Australia League Junior category’s player as well. Every week, Maira trains in a Basket Academy in Perth. Maira started playing basketball in Maldives. While she was studying in Iskandhar School, she had participated in the various programs held by the Basketball Association.

Maira is mostly interested in basketball, but she plays other sports like football, table tennis, swimming, and hockey. From swimming, she has been receiving opportunities at the junior level. However, she wants to go forward in basketball and she spends most of her time on basketball.

Maira is a brilliant youngster. She excels in both studies and sports. She even got a special academic award from her school as well. Along with this, she is a gifted writer as well. She had written her own storybook “Maira in Silent Space”. This is a children’s book made with pictures. This book is even available in some of the bookshops in Maldives. Maira is working on a Dhivehi book as of now.
