Imaan Breaks 2 National Records in the World Swimming Championship

21 December 2021

Maldivian swimmer Ali Imaan has broken 2 national records in the ongoing Swimming World Championship in the United Arab Emirates.

He broke the records in the special 25-meter short course’s 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke events. The previous 100m backstroke record was also held by him. In 2019 December, he participated in the South Asian Games held in Nepal and made a new 100m backstroke record by finishing the race in 1 minute 5.2 seconds (1:05.26). He finished the race in Abu Dhabi in 1:03.02.

The 400m record that he broke was previously held by Mubaal Azzam. Mubaal participated in the South Asian Games and finished the 400m freestyle race in 4:40.28. Imaan completed this race yesterday in 4:25.45.

Imaan had broken 3 other national records earlier in October at the Swimming World Cup held in Russia. Imaan is training in Russia through the help of a scholarship given to him by the World’s Swimming Federation (Fina). The first national record he broke in the Swimming World Cup was a 100m medley short course. He broke the short course 50m backstroke and 400m medley records as well.

Imaan was the one who previously held the 50m backstroke record as well. He beat his own record by completing the race in 29.23 seconds. He previously broke the record in 2019 December at the South Asian Games in Nepal. The record that he made at that time was 29.44 seconds.

The medley short course 100m record was previously held by Mubaal Azaam Ibrahim. Mubaal made this record back in 2017 in Turkmenistan in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Game by finishing the race in 1:10.13. Imaan broke this record in the Fina Swimming World Cup by finishing the race in 1:04.93. The short course medley 400m record was previously held by the first Maldivian swimmer that participated in that event of the International Games, Mohamed Aan Hussain. Aan participated in the South Asian Games and finished the race in 5:49.08.
