Sri Lanka has given Maldives the chance to host the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship set to be held this year.
Previously, it was settled that the Junior Championship would first be held in Maldives in 2021 and then held in Sri Lanka in 2022. However, due to Covid-19, it was impossible to hold the championship in Maldives last year.
TTM’s President Ali Rasheed stated. “We have been talking to the Lankan Association’s President. Even they said ‘Okay’ since we were unable to host the championship last year. And to continue in Maldives.”
He has mentioned that out of 7 countries in South Asia, 5 countries had confirmed that they would participate.
“Even though confirmation has not been given, India and Pakistan have also indicated that they would participate in the championship held in Maldives.”
The championship will go on from March 20 to March 22. Ali mentioned that the final documents will be shared with the South Asia TT Federation this week. The tournament will be held in Social Center Indoor.
Since this year is the 50th anniversary of Maldives Tourism, it has been scheduled that an international TT tournament will also be held this year in September. That tournament will be held in partnership with the Tourism Ministry. Ali mentioned that countries from outside South Asia will also be invited to that tournament.
The Commonwealth TT Federation’s Chairman Vivek Kohli on his trip to Maldives in September stated that Maldives can become a hub for TT within sports tourism.
