MAZIYA NARROWLY LOSES TO MOHUN BAGAN

5 October 2023

A double by Jason Cummings, with the second one coming during added time, ensured that India's Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured a 2-1 victory over Maziya Sports & Recreation from Maldives in Group D of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium on Monday. This outcome puts Mohun Bagan, the Indian Super League team, at the top of Group D with a perfect record of six points from two matches, while both Maziya and Bashundhara Kings have three points each. The home team had their first scoring opportunity in the 13th minute, but Hussain Shareef made an excellent save to deny Brendan Hamill's header from a pass by Cummings.

Ten minutes later, Hamza Mohamed of Maziya unleashed a shot that grazed past Mohun Bagan's goal, with Naiz Hassan narrowly missing a chance to reach the ball. Mohun Bagan's persistent offensive efforts paid off in the 28th minute when Hugo Boumous provided a pass to Cummings at the edge of the penalty area. The Australian forward skillfully evaded Sebastijan Antic before firing a powerful left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Maziya responded with a Tomoki Wada volley in the 35th minute, which Hamill blocked as Vishal Kaith, the goalkeeper, scrambled across the goal.

In the 41st minute, Mohun Bagan had a chance to make it 2-0, but Cummings' attempt to pass the ball to Dimitrios Petratos in a penalty kick trick was intercepted by Antic. Just before half-time, Maziya seized the opportunity to equalize when Wada struck a thunderous shot down the middle of Kaith's goal, which proved too difficult for the Mohun Bagan goalkeeper to handle.

Five minutes into the second half, Maziya's Shareef was called into action once again, making consecutive reflex saves to deny Armando Sadiku and Cummings as the hosts searched for a second goal. In the 58th minute, Sadiku found space outside the penalty area but was thwarted once more by Shareef, who dived to his right to push the ball out for a corner kick.

The Maldives international goalkeeper continued his exceptional performance in the 79th minute, deflecting Manvir Singh's long-range shot and outmaneuvering Sahal Abdul Samad in a one-on-one situation just three minutes later.

However, in the second minute of added time, Shareef was finally beaten when Sahal threaded a pass to Cummings, who made amends for his earlier penalty miss by slotting the ball between the goalkeeper's legs to secure the victory for Mohun Bagan.
